We have seen that Kumarakom and its sourrounding villages are blessed with its wide spreading backwater bodies. The major mode of transport was always voyage. So different types of boats can be seen here in kumarakom backwaters and rivers. These boats ranges from kumarakom rice brages to duckgrowers wherry. They have been sharing their joy and tears with kumarakom backwaters for centuries . kumarakom rice barges had a substantial role in the history of Kerala ,particularly of kumarakom . A rice barger is a huge cock-boat. It can carry upto 35-40 tonnes of cargo. When Alappuzha was a major port, these rice bargers played a vital role in the economy of Kerala. They carried pepper,copra,timber etc…..from the valleys of the eastern ghats up to the port of Alappuzha .Graduallly the importance of Kumarakom descendeed and Cochin became the major port. Roads were build throughout and the relevence of such huge boats had nochance. Nevertheless moving cargo by these huge Kumarakom rice barges is still profitable. As military boats changed into kumarakom luxury racing boats, so the Alappuzha rice bargers became boat houses which are used as luxurious voyage vessels .They are known as kumarakom houseboats or Kumarakom houseboats.

The Alleppey house boats are fashioned out of Artocarpus timber (bot : artocarpus indicus)
The strong heavy wooden planks can with stand the challenges offered by Kumarakom back waters and monsoon. Long wooden planks are connected together by means of coconut palm fibre and coir. No nails are used .Once the 'chassis' is built it is time to build its stylish luxurious body. The contours of the body are like the roofs of traditional Kumarakom back water homes. The decoration is with bamboo mat, coir, palymra leaves etc……..

Kumarakom Houseboat Overnight Stay Itinerary

1) Check in time 11:30 AM Check out time 09:00 AM.
2) Management is not responsible for late arrivals and check out time will be followed as per schedule.
3) A/C will provide 9.00 PM to 6.00 AM,A/C is not required by day as the backwater breeze gives everything.
4) You can enjoy the privacy in the boat and is exclusively for you.
5) 05.30 pm to 07.30 am- Boat will Anchored & it will be idle in the lake. (As per GOVT. Rule- Village people need to put the net in the lake for fishing)
